EBN: Caregiving Support - Meeting a Loved One's Current and Future Needs
Most caregivers enter this role with little or no planning. Instead, they begin caregiving in a crisis situation, typically making the experience extremely challenging and stressful.
In this session, we'll discuss what to do when you notice aging-related physical, mental, or cognitive deterioration in an older relative. Our presenter, Julie Norstrand, founder of Help My Aging Parents, will cover:
1) Evaluating the situation and tips on when to step in to offer support;
2) What the conversation should consist of and what topics to cover;
3) Setting up a plan that is collaborative;
4) Services and resources available in the community; and
5) Caregiver self-care.
Julie Norstrand founded Help My Aging Parents to empower families to become proactive caregivers, ready to meet the needs of aging relatives. Julie has worked as a gerontologist for 15 years, serves on the Board of the Newton Council on Aging, and facilitates caregiver support groups.
Julie has a MSW and PhD with a specialization in gerontology from the Boston College School of Social Work. She also has a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Drexel University.
