EBN: What Job Seekers Need to Know about Pre-Employment Assessments

More than 80% of employers now use online assessments to help guide their hiring decisions. These assessments are used to measure the abilities, personality, attitudes and skills of job applicants. Hiring can feel risky for employers and the information these tools generate is designed to make these decisions feel safer, fairer and less subjective. 

So what are employers actually expecting and getting from these assessments? Where do they fit in the hiring process? Are they fair to all applicants, regardless of their background or age? Can you prepare for them? These are just some of the questions, concerns and apprehensions that those of us less familiar with these tools may have.

In this session, we'll tackle these questions, and more, head on. Josh Millet, Founder and CEO of Criteria Corporation, will demystify online assessments, helping us understand their purpose, design and application. He'll also help us understand what they can and can't tell employers and how we can use them to our advantage as job seekers. 

We will also hear from the team at WAHVE (Work At Home Vintage Experts) about how they use pre-employment assessments to qualify and place pre-retirement professionals in remote positions in the insurance industry.

Josh Millet started Criteria in 2006 with a vision to create a pre-employment testing service that would make the highest quality employee assessment tools accessible to companies of all sizes. He previously co-founded, built and sold an online test preparation company. Josh holds a PhD in history from Harvard University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar and a Mellon Fellow.

Josh Pianko is President of Brainwahve Qualifying Solutions for WAHVE. He helped develop WAHVE’s unique qualifying process, which enables objectivity in the hiring process by focusing on skills and experience and a detailed position description. He is an entrepreneur who has started companies in several industries.

Carla Cowan, VP of Qualifying for WAHVE, runs the teams that interview and select candidates for placement in remote positions. She has worked in the insurance industry in various roles for 30 years. She works from home in Texas.

Melody Kauffman, VP of Placement for WAHVE, manages the Placement Team who spend their day matching the right talent to the right assignments. She has a 30-year career in the insurance industry and works for home in Pennsylvania.
